Tales from New Orleans!

Wow, what a fantastic place for a conference! New Orleans – a hot steamy melting pot of amazing architecture, history, music and cuisine and also the venue for APMP Bid & Proposal Con 2017. No wonder that more than 900 bid and proposals professionals made the journey to hear about the latest and greatest in bidding, to form new associations and to network with colleagues and associates.

Although representation from the Southern Hemisphere was relatively small, my overwhelming take out is that our profession here in Australia is alive and well, and competitive with the best around the globe.  As an example, our chapter beat off the competition from 27 other applicants to take out the APMP Chapter Programs and Special Events Award 2016 for the inaugural ANZ Chapter conference in Melbourne last March. Fantastic! Our own Richard Southern was on hand to grace the stage and pick up the award in person.

The conference ran over four days and had over 60 different presentations and workshops aligned to audiences interested in capture, federal government, professional development and other streams.  Highlights for me were:

  • Interactive artist Phil Hansen’s fascinating presentation about resilience and his history of overcoming a career threatening hand tremor in his early days as an artist.
  • Meeting up with APMP colleagues from around the world to share war stories and form new alliances.
  • Participating in many discussions around professional development and enticing the next generation of professionals into our business; and how to provide them with clear and rewarding pathways for growth and professional satisfaction.

The challenge now is to channel all the learnings I picked up into everyday life at BidWrite. Look out team….
