BidWrite's latest insights for Defence suppliers

Defence/army/navy figurines placed upon stack fo coins, representing the cost of Defence bidding
In this co-authored article, BidWrite’s Rodger Manning and KordaMentha’s Mike Kalms examine the true cost of tendering in Defence. Their staggering $1.4 billion estimate represents an opportunity cost felt across project delivery, R&D and work-life balance. Rodger and Mike suggest practical approaches to help the Defence industry do better.
Rodger Manning shares his thoughts on what the Australian Government's recently released Defence Strategic Review (DSR) means for where the defence tendering industry is headed, and what Primes and SMEs need to keep in mind when preparing future tenders.
Powerful Defence tendering partnerships represented by an illuminated neon light depicting two hands shaking.
The old adage that people work with people they know, like and trust stands equally true in the complex world of Defence. BidWrite Principal Rodger Manning explores how Defence primes and Australian SMEs can work together to forge strong partnerships.
Many organisations still struggle to develop a strategy that meets the expectations not just of Defence, but critically the Australian SME community. So how can companies develop AIC strategies that deliver the ultimate win, win, win - for industry, Defence and of course themselves?

FAQs: Your Defence tendering questions answered

A: Defence tendering is more complex than most other industries’ procurement processes. Defence tenders often have stricter compliance requirements and require more detailed responses than other forms of tendering. The good news is that while Defence or Defence primes and Tier 1 contractors are very clear on the information they need to make a decision, industry often has considerable freedom in how to respond – this provides ample opportunity to sell on value, not your headline price.

A: BidWrite combines Defence industry-specific expertise with proven persuasive bid writing strategies. Our team includes former veterans and Defence industry specialists, giving us first-hand knowledge of Australian Defence procurement requirements. With detailed understanding of the critical elements of Defence bids, we know what it takes to submit a winning response. We ensure your proposal is fully compliant, clearly addresses every requirement, and positions your strengths in a way that resonates with Defence evaluators. By doing this, we’ve helped our clients secure multi-million-dollar Defence contracts across land, maritime, aerospace, and cyber sectors – and we’re confident we can help your organisation win work in Defence too.

A: BidWrite has worked across a wide range of Defence sectors, including land systems, maritime, aerospace and aviation, weapons and munitions, cyber security, logistics and support, training and simulation, and infrastructure projects. We are experienced with all types of ASDEFCON tenders, including Non-Materiel Procurement, Security and Estate Group tenders, and Defence Digital Group tenders. This breadth of experience means our team of Defence tendering consultants understand the nuances of many domains. Whatever your specialisation, we can help you prepare a winning Defence bid.

A: When bidding directly into Defence, you may not need a security clearance at the time. However, you may need to demonstrate your ability to secure the required level of membership within the Defence Industry Security Program (DISP) or to achieve particular security clearances for your personnel. Defence primes often have DISP membership as a pre-qualification requirement to provide services to them. BidWrite can advise you on the security requirements for your tender, and if additional help is required, we’ll refer you to our specialist Defence security partners De Stefano & Co.

A: Yes. Although providing end-to-end bid management services allows us to maximise your chance of success, we also support clients who need help with specific elements of their tender response. This could include developing your AIC Plan, conducting colour reviews, developing your service delivery strategy, preparing case studies, crafting a persuasive executive summary, or refining your risk management plan. And if you know a major procurement opportunity is coming up, our Bid Kickstarter can even help you prepare strategic win themes early – well ahead of the RFT being released. We’ll tailor our services to provide the level of support you need to strengthen your bid and improve your chance of success.
